Three Issues

The Diocesan Convention passed three important measures at its convention.

1. Our Diocese voted by a two to one margin to join the Network of Anglican Parishes and Dioceses. This means that regardless of the response of others in the Episcopal Church to the larger Anglican Communion, our Diocese and the Church of the Apostles remains aligned with the larger Anglican Communion. Please be aware that the larger Anglican Communion holds to traditional views of marriage and ordination.

2. Our Diocese voted to make each parish's delegates to the Diocesan Convention proportional to the average attendance of each parish. In the past, representation was according to the number nominally on the parish rolls. Parishes who in the past had a larger number of delegates because they failed to clean their roles of inactive members will loose some of their delegates, and churches like Apostles, who have always kept our roles accurate will gain some delegates.

3. Our Diocese voted to make a Canon on Moral standards part of our Diocesan Canons. As a diocese we affirm that "'Holy Matrimony' and 'Marriage' refer to the exclusive physical and spiritual union of one man and one woman, by mutual consent of the heart, mind and will, and with the intent that it be lifelong." Further, "The blessing of sexual relationships between persons of the same sex is prohibited in churches, missions and congregations of this Diocese; and clergy persons resident or licensed in the Diocese are prohibited from performing such blessings in any venue." And further, clergy and those seeking ordination, "shall be under obligation to model in their lives, as wholesome examples, the received teaching of the Church that all of its members are to abstain from sexual relations outside of marriage."

4. I was elected as a delegate to the Provincial Synod which meets once a year, this coming year in Dallas. We are part of Province VII, which includes Texas, New Mexico, Kansas, Oklahoma, West Missouri, Arkansas and Louisiana. Given the events in the Anglican Communion and the Episcopal Church it should be an interesting experience.
